Who We Are

DC Klezmer Workshop is an informal but enthusiastic collective of Metro Area musicians.  Klezmer trumpeter Howard Ungar founded the DC Klezmer Workshop so that he could play more klezmer. Howard has been playing trumpet since 5th grade. He started playing klezmer in the 90’s and attended his first KlezKamp in 1999. Since then he has attended KlezKamp, Yiddish New York, KlezKanada and countless concerts. As a founding member of the DC-based klezmer band Mrs. Toretsky’s Nightmare, he has played at numerous weddings, bar mitvahs, and holiday events. You can also hear him playing occasional trumpet with the DC-based Machaya Band.  Howard also blows shofar at Adas Israel during the high holidays.

What We Do

We meet monthly at Adas Israel to learn and play klezmer tunes together. We have brass (האָרן), woodwinds (וואָאָדווינדס), percussion (פּויק) and strings (פֿידל). Several times a year we invite leading klezmer musicians from out of town to teach our workshops. In 2017/18 we invited Dan Blacksberg, Susan Watts, Alicia Svigals, Mark Rubin, and Steve Weintraub. In June 2018 we had our first dance party attended by over 100 musicians and dancers.

Dance Workshop on December 16 @ 2pm Register Here

Come learn the art of Yiddish Dance with world renowned dance instructor Steve Weintraub. Klezmer music was mostly created to be dance music. This course covers the figures, steps and styling for many of the dances in the klezmer repertoire. Learn the lively Freylekhs, the boisterous Bulgar, the stately Zhok, that essential Jewish square dance, the Sher (a party with 7 of your friends), and many other circle, couple and set dances.
