4. Tu B’Shevat Seder Celebrates Protecting the Environment ,
January 29
Protecting the Environment is a Jewish value rooted in
the Creation story at the beginning of the book of Genesis.
This year the Adas Israel Green Committee is sponsoring a Tu
B”Shevat Seder whose theme will be protecting the
environment from the ravages of global warming and the
pollution of air, water, and earth. The Seder will be part
of a special Shabbat dinner this Friday, January 29, 2010 at
7 p.m. following the 6 p.m. Kabbalat Shabbat service. The
Seder will be family friendly by including games for
children to play and by serving kid friendly food. Rabbis
Steinlauf and Feinberg along with Cantor Weber will be
leading the Seder. The Seder will end by 9 p.m.
The cost of the dinner is $15 for adults and $8 for
children 13 and under. Please RSVP by calling Carol Ansell
at 202-362-4433.
Tu B'Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar --
celebrated this year on Shabbat, January 29- 30, 2010 -- is
the day that marks the beginning of a "New Year for Trees."
This is the season in which the earliest-blooming
Trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep
and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle.
Legally, the "New Year for Trees" relates to the various
tithes that must be separated from produce grown in the Holy
Land . These tithes differ from year to year in the
seven-year Shemittah cycle; the point at which a budding
fruit is considered to belong to the next year of the cycle
is the 15th of Shevat.
We mark the day of Tu B'Shevat by eating fruit, particularly
from the kinds that are singled out by the Torah in its
praise of the bounty of the Holy Land : grapes, figs,
pomegranates, olives and dates. On this day we remember that
God created us “to work the earth and protect it (Genesis
2:15).”
