Open Door |

"Open
Door is for twenty- and thirty-somethings with mixed Jewish and non-Jewish
ancestry. Do you have some Jewish ancestry, perhaps a Jewish parent or
grandparent? Are you interested
in learning how Judaism can spiritually enhance your life? And do you want
to discover what has kept the Jewish people—your people—a vital force in
human history and civilization? Please join Rabbi Feinberg and Natalie
Merkur Rose, LCSW-C, Director of Jewish Community Outreach at the
Jewish Social
Service Agency, for this special workshop. Come with your curiosity and your
questions, and let us share with you the magic of our—and your—Jewish tradition! |

Jewish Literacy |
|
|
Jewish
Literacy is an introductory course that covers the basics
of Jewish beliefs, history, holidays, and life cycle and offers a
wonderful opportunity to ask those questions about Judaism that
you've never had the chance to ask. Taught by Adas Israel rabbis,
the program format is a series of eight lectures, meeting weekly for 1.5 hours.
Jewish Literacy welcomes everyone—Jews who never went to Hebrew
school... people with Jewish ancestry who want to explore their heritage...
intermarried or inter-dating couples... non-Jews with Jews in their
family... those considering conversion (this is not a conversion course,
see below for conversion course information)... and the Jewishly curious! The
class runs once a year in the fall.
Weekly topics: Introduction to Basic Beliefs, Calendar and Holidays (part 1), Holidays (part 2), Prayer, Life Cycle
(two sessions), History & Identity, Hanukkah and the Dilemmas of Modernity. |

Learners' Minyanim |
|
|
Are
you lost in services? Don't know when and why to stand
or sit? Don't know Hebrew, or just learning it?
Do you want to read Torah but not in front of the
whole congregation? Would you like to talk about the meaning of different
prayers? These learner-friendly services will take place October through March,
and be led by either Rabbi Feinberg or Rabbi Steinlauf and will offer a variety
of ways to participate. Learners' Minyanim is open to all, welcoming adult
students at any level. These services offer an ideal
environment for all learners, especially those working towards conversion, or
studying Jewish Literacy. |

Conversion Course |
|
|
Adas Israel participates in a consortium for conversion that includes other
Conservative synagogues in DC and nearby Maryland: Congregation Beth El
of Mongtomery County, Ohr Kodesh Congregation, and Tifereth Israel. Adas Israel rabbis (Gil Steinlauf, Charles M. Feinberg,
Jeffrey Wohlberg, and Avis Miller) teach and sponsor
candidates, as do the rabbis from the other participating synagogues. The
course is 2 semesters. The 2008 - 09 class schedule is forthcoming. This intensive program (designed for
serious students) includes lectures/discussions, beginning Hebrew classes,
and experiential components. Pre-registration required.
To enter the class as a conversion candidate,
students must have a sponsoring rabbi. Contact Marcia Miller, class
coordinator, for a course
packet, schedule and fees, registration form and other pertinent information.
