Adas Reads Kick-off
(light brunch at 10:00 am)
Brunch
and Learn and Adas Reads will kick off with
Tom Friedman, three-time
Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for the New York Times, interviewing our own
Laura Blumenfeld,
national reporter for The Washington Post and author of the NYT best-seller,
Revenge: A Story of Hope. Friedman and Blumenfeld will discuss the
influence of revenge on international affairs. Revenge is this year’s
book selection for Adas Reads. Revenge is the story of a terrorist
attack on the author’s father and her search for the perfect revenge.
Traveling to Iran, Albania, Sicily and other revenge capitals, Blumenfeld
soaks up the stories and wisdom from avengers the world over, as she plots
to infiltrate the shooter’s life.
Described
as a "passionate gripping . . . work of ambition and humanity"
by the Washington Post, Revenge was excerpted by the New
Yorker, featured in People magazine, translated into eight
languages, and named one of the best books of the year by The New York
Times.
Among the many positive reviews of the book
were one from the Los Angeles Times: "Perhaps one prescription
right now for peace in the Middle East would be to mobilize 30,000 Laura
Blumenfelds," and another from the New York Times: "A
vitally important story . . . Revenge is written with such
forcefulness and immediacy that by the end of her story Blumenfeld has
carried the reader through an intellectual transformation akin to her
own."
A national correspondent for the Washington
Post, Blumenfeld has also written for the New Yorker, the New
York Times Magazine, and the Los Angeles Times. She has
appeared on Charlie Rose, Oprah, The Today Show, and the NewsHour with Jim
Lehrer. She lives in Washington with her husband, Baruch Weiss, and their
three children.

Scholar Weekend
Prof.
Vanessa Ochs, Scholar-in-Residence, on “Raising Your Children,
Grandchildren and Students to be Mensches.”
Jewish families, whether religious or
secular, believe in certain ethical perspectives that govern how we
interact with each other. Professor Ochs calls these the “Jewish
Sensibilities.” By raising awareness of our codes of behavior and giving
them names, we can better transmit Jewish values to our young people.
Vanessa L. Ochs is the author of Inventing
Jewish Ritual winner of a 2007 National Jewish Book Award. Her other
books include Sarah Laughed, The Jewish Dream Book (with Elizabeth
Ochs), The Book of Jewish Sacred Practices (edited with Irwin
Kula), Words on Fire: One Woman’s Journey into the Sacred, and Safe
and Sound: Protecting Your Child In An Unpredictable World. Prof. Ochs
is an associate professor in the Department of Religious Studies and
Jewish Studies Program at the University of Virginia where her courses
include Judaism and medicine, Jewish feminism, and studies in Jewish
ritual. In the fall of 2009, she will be a research fellow at the Frankel
Institute at the University of Michigan.
